Other than the chick I painted recently, I do not have a lot of experience painting birds.  I wasn’t sure how I was going to paint the feathers, I only just feel like I have gotten the hang of painting fur!  The thing I love about painting, is the mystery and unpredictability of it!  This goose picture is a perfect example of what  I am talking about.  What do I mean by that?  Well, as I was painting, I was also learning about bird physiology.  I started to notice things about birds that I had never really considered before, like the way the shoulder blades poke up when the bird’s wings are raised and that geese have a large hind toe on their feet.  The colouring too is much more complicated than I realized.  When ever I see a Canada Goose, I see a black and white bird, but when you really look, there are many shades of brown too.  The other mystery with painting, is I never really know how it’s going to turn out.  As I was experimenting with the paint I began to find a paint stroke to mimic the lines of the feathers.  All in all, I am pretty happy with how this one turned out and I think I will paint a Blue Heron next 😉
